Water Bottle Weights Partner Circuit
Students make light weights from half-liter bottles filled with sand or water and move through a six-station strength circuit in pairs. One partner works while the other counts and checks form with a task card, building strength and safe technique.
How to play
- Build it (5 min): each pair fills two 16-ounce bottles with sand (or water), screws the cap on tight, and seals it with tape; each weighs about 1 to 1.5 pounds.
- Technique (4 min): the teacher demonstrates the six stations: biceps curl, shoulder press, goblet squat, one-arm row, seated twist, and lunge.
- Mark each station with a cone and a card showing a picture and two form cues. Send two pairs to each station.
- Circuit (12 min): one partner works for 45 seconds while the other counts reps and checks the card; switch roles, and after 2 minutes rotate to the next station.
- Final challenge (3 min): each pair picks a favorite station and tries to beat its rep count with good form.
- Wrap-up (1 min): each student names the muscle they felt working most.
Rules
- Quality before quantity: a sloppy rep doesn't count.
- Bottles are set on the ground, never thrown.
- The observing partner gives feedback respectfully, using the card cues.
- Safety: flat back on squats and rows; if something hurts, stop.
Variations
Easier
Use empty or partly filled water bottles and 30 seconds of work.
Standard
Use 16-ounce sand bottles, 45 seconds of work, and rotate every 2 minutes.
Harder
Use 1-liter bottles or combo moves, such as squat to press.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a seated version of each station, working the upper body only.
- Hearing impairment or autism: picture cards and a visual signal for station changes.
- Fitness level: each student chooses an empty, water, or sand bottle.
Learning goals
- Perform basic strength exercises with safe technique.
- Observe and correct a partner's form.
- Make training equipment from reused containers.
Equipment for a class of 25
- recycled bottles: 26
- sand
- masking tape: 2
- challenge cards: 6
- cones: 6
Teacher tip
Roll a cardstock funnel so the sand goes in without spilling. Watch squats and rows most closely: knees out and back flat.
