Wall Sets Above the Line
An individual setting drill against a wall with a chalk line at 2.5 m that every set must clear. Students improve their hand and leg position and set personal records for consecutive sets.
How to play
- Draw a chalk line 2.5 m high on the wall. Each student has a light ball, 1 m from the wall and 2 m from the next student. Demonstrate: hands in a triangle above the forehead, knees bent (2 min).
- Catch and push (3 min): toss above the line, catch at the forehead, bend the knees and push the ball back by extending arms and legs.
- Continuous sets (3 min): contact with the finger pads without holding; if the ball drops below the line, catch it and restart the count.
- Partner record (4 min): one sets for 30 seconds while the partner counts good sets; switch on the whistle, three tries each.
- Final challenge (3 min): clap, touch the floor or spin between sets; each challenge with 5 sets in a row earns a point.
Rules
- Stay in your own space and never step into your neighbor's to chase a ball.
- Only two-handed sets that clear the line count.
- Count out loud and honestly; the record is personal.
Variations
Easier
Line at 2 m, and students may catch and re-toss between sets.
Standard
Continuous sets above the 2.5 m line from 1 m away.
Harder
Line at 3 m, 2 m away, alternating sets and forearm passes.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility or wheelchair: seated 1 m from the wall, line at 1.8 m, catching allowed.
- Low vision: bright ball or large balloon and a thick chalk line in a contrasting color.
- Less ball control: use a balloon, which falls slower; skilled students alternate wall sets and sets to themselves.
Learning goals
- Form a triangle with the hands above the forehead.
- Coordinate leg and arm extension when setting.
- Beat a personal record of consecutive sets.
Equipment for a class of 25
- light balls: 25
- chalk: 5
Teacher tip
Many students slap with the palms or stiff arms, so have them 'catch' at the forehead first and then push. While you explain, balls stay on the floor.
