Wall Bar Route Cards
Colored ribbons are tied on the wall bars, and each card shows a route, such as red, blue, yellow, that students touch in order while climbing up and down. They work on climbing with alternating holds, memory, and planning their path.
How to play
- Before class, tie ribbons of 4 colors to different rungs on each wall bar section, no higher than the fifth rung, and lay mats underneath (setup).
- Teach safe climbing: always three points of contact on the bars, and move only one hand or one foot at a time (2 min).
- Make groups of 3 per section. The first climber picks a card with 3 colors, studies it for 5 seconds, hands it to a teammate, and climbs touching the ribbons in that order with a hand (4 min).
- Teammates check the order against the card; if it is right, the climber keeps the card as a point. Rotate turns (4 min).
- Second round with 4-color cards and routes that make students travel sideways across the wall bars (3 min).
- Each group invents a new route, draws it on a card, and challenges another group with it (2 min).
Rules
- Nobody puts their feet above the rung marked with the white ribbon.
- Keep three points of contact on the bars at all times.
- Climb down rung by rung; no jumping off.
- Only one climber per section; the others wait sitting on the mat.
Variations
Easier
Cards have 2 colors and students may look at them while climbing.
Standard
Cards have 3 colors that are memorized before climbing.
Harder
Students must touch each ribbon with a named body part, like the knee or the elbow.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: tie ribbons on the low rungs so the student can reach them from the wheelchair or standing with support, still following the sequence.
- Visual impairment: replace colors with different textures tied to the rungs.
- Fitness level: fearful students work only on the three lowest rungs and on sideways traverses.
Learning goals
- Climb the wall bars keeping three points of contact.
- Memorize and follow a color route.
- Plan movements before carrying them out.

Teacher tip
Mark the maximum height with a very visible white ribbon and repeat the rule before every round. Tie the ribbons before class so practice time is not lost.
