Walking Dynamic Warm-Up: Toy Soldiers, Knee Hugs, and Cradles
A dynamic flexibility series performed while moving down 15 m lanes: knee hugs, hip cradles, quad pulls, toy soldiers, and lateral lunges. It prepares the hamstrings, glutes, quads, and groin for running without relying on static stretching.
How to play
- Set up 5 lanes of 15 m with cones and form 5 lines of 5. After a 2-minute easy jog, do each exercise down the lane and jog back on the outside.
- Knee hugs (1 min): each step, hug one knee to the chest and rise onto the toes of the standing leg.
- Hip cradles (1 min): knee turned out, hold the ankle and knee and pull the shin toward the chest.
- Quad pulls (1 min): grab the top of the foot, heel to glute, opposite arm reaching up.
- Toy soldiers (2 min): kick a straight leg forward only as high as a flat back allows, touching the toes with the opposite hand; walk the first trip, add a small skip on the second.
- Lateral lunges (2 min): travel sideways with big lunges, hips back and chest up, switching lead side on the way back. Finish with 2 build-ups of 15 m at 70%.
Rules
- Each line starts when the student ahead is 5 m down the lane so nobody steps on anyone.
- Your back sets the range: if it rounds or you lose balance, make the movement smaller.
- No bouncing or jerking: move with control to a comfortable end range, never into pain.
- Always return on the outside of the lanes and never cut in front of another line.
Variations
Easier
Walk every exercise and rest a hand on a partner's shoulder whenever balance is hard.
Standard
Walk each exercise down the lane with gradually bigger range and jog easy on the way back.
Harder
Link two exercises in the same trip with 5 m of high knees in between while keeping good posture.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the movements in place or seated on the edge of a bench, moving the free leg through the same sequence.
- Autism: a sign with the name and a stick figure of each exercise at the start of the lane.
- Lower fitness: use 10 m lanes instead of 15 m and walk back to recover.
Learning goals
- Perform a dynamic flexibility series with good posture control.
- Distinguish dynamic flexibility from static stretching and when to use each.
- Prepare the leg muscles for running independently.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 10
Teacher tip
The classic mistake is a toy soldier kicked too high with a rounded back. Put a student with solid form at the front of each line as a model.
