Walk the Bases: A Question at Every Corner
A cool-down where small groups walk the diamond and answer a reflection question at each base. Heart rates come down while students reflect on their learning and how they played together.
How to play
- Groups of four or five walk in single file from home around the diamond, with a card at each base (1 min).
- First base: everyone names something they improved today in hitting, throwing or fielding (2 min).
- Second base: everyone shares an act of fair play or help they saw from a classmate (2 min).
- Third base: one thing they'd change in the game so more people get involved (2 min).
- Home: the group picks one word to sum up the lesson and says it aloud to the class (1 min).
Rules
- Always walk, no running.
- One person speaks at a time and the others listen.
- You can pass, but you'll be asked again at the end of the round.
Variations
Easier
Only two bases with simple yes-or-no questions.
Standard
Four stops with open questions.
Harder
At third base, the group agrees on one specific proposal and presents it to the teacher.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: questions are written on the card and answers are given facing the group.
- Students with limited mobility: the group walks a smaller diamond or the bases are moved closer.
- Shy students: answer with a gesture or write the answer on the card.
Learning goals
- Evaluate their own progress.
- Recognize classmates' fair play.
- Suggest ways to get everyone involved.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bases: 4
- question cards: 4
Teacher tip
If several diamonds are set up, give each group its own so they don't bunch up. Listen in at third base: it often gives useful ideas for next class.
