Walk and Talk: Three Pacing Decisions From Today
A cool-down where students walk in pairs and each one explains three pacing decisions they made during the running session: when they pushed, when they eased off and why. It brings the heart rate down while turning the experience into learning about managing effort.
How to play
- Students pair up and walk at an easy pace around the track or schoolyard (1 min).
- The first student answers out loud: "Where did I decide to speed up? Where did I slow down? What would I do differently?" The partner just listens (2 min).
- Switch roles with the same three questions (2 min).
- Breathing while walking: inhale for four steps and exhale for six (1 min).
- Standing, each student writes on the worksheet one sentence about a decision they would repeat and one they would change (2 min).
Rules
- The listener doesn't judge or compare: at most, they can ask one question to clarify.
- Keep walking; if someone is still very tired, they sit down and do only the breathing part.
- Worksheets are personal and the teacher reads them only with the student's permission.
Variations
Easier
One question per person: what they would repeat today.
Standard
Three questions per person and a note on the worksheet.
Harder
Each pair also proposes one pacing rule for the next session and shares it with the group.
Adaptations
- Autism: may do the reflection in writing instead of out loud, with the three questions printed.
- Hearing impairment: partners face each other when speaking or use the written worksheet as support.
- Limited mobility: the conversation happens seated or in a wheelchair, with the same structure.
Learning goals
- Recover actively after an endurance effort.
- Analyze one's own pacing decisions during the run.
- Practice active listening and respect for a partner's experience.
Equipment for a class of 25
- worksheets: 30
Teacher tip
Collect the worksheets at the end of each month: they show clearly how students' effort management develops. It works after any fartlek, interval or steady-run session.
