Walk-and-Talk Reflection
In pairs, students walk at an easy pace around a cone loop while discussing a reflection prompt about the lesson; the prompt changes every lap and partners switch every two laps. It combines active recovery with guided reflection.
How to play
- Set out 8 cones in an oval about 200 ft around and form random pairs at the starting cone.
- Give the first prompt: 'What part of class was hardest for you, and why?' Pairs walk side by side at a relaxed pace and take turns answering.
- Each lap takes about 1 minute; as pairs pass the starting cone, call out the next prompt.
- Every two laps, the partner on the left stops at the starting cone and waits for the next pair to form a new partnership.
- Use 5 prompts in total: something you learned, something you'd do again, how you helped someone, how you feel right now, and one goal for next class.
- The sixth and final lap is silent with slow nose breathing, 4 steps in and 4 steps out; at the finish, students stretch their calves for 30 seconds per leg.
Rules
- Walk only; anyone who runs goes back to the starting cone and restarts the lap.
- Everyone travels the same direction on the outside of the cones so nobody collides.
- Both partners answer every prompt.
- Keep your voice low so other pairs can talk.
Variations
Easier
Keep the same partner the whole time and use yes-or-no prompts that students expand with one example.
Standard
Five spoken prompts plus a silent final lap, switching partners every two laps.
Harder
At the end, each student sums up for the class, in one sentence, what their last partner shared.
Adaptations
- For students with limited mobility, shorten the loop or walk a straight out-and-back path at their own pace.
- For students who are blind or have low vision, walk arm in arm with a partner who describes the route and calls out the cones.
- Students who finished the main activity very tired can walk the first two laps without talking, just breathing.
Learning goals
- Reflect on the lesson using guided prompts.
- Bring heart rate down with easy walking and controlled breathing.
- Share their own experiences and listen to classmates.

Teacher tip
Stand at the starting cone to manage the laps and catch bits of the conversations. If a pair goes quiet, walk a stretch with them and offer a more specific prompt.
