Walk-and-Talk Debrief: Trip Lessons in Pairs
After a trip or a prep session, the class walks in pairs around an easy loop and answers questions that change every lap. It slows things down and turns the experience into concrete improvements for the next trip.

How to play
- Explanation and one question card per pair (1 min).
- Laps 1 and 2 with the first partner, on plan versus reality: did we stay on schedule? Did we have too much or too little gear? (3 min).
- Switch partners. Laps 3 and 4 on safety and group dynamics: was there a risky moment? Who would you thank for something? (3 min).
- Standing circle: each pair names one concrete improvement for the next trip and the teacher writes it on the board or a phone (3 min).
Rules
- Walk at conversation pace without stopping the loop.
- Talk about facts and decisions, not blame.
- What a pair shares privately isn't repeated in the circle without permission.
- Every improvement must be concrete: what, who, and when.
Variations
Easier
One question per lap and any improvement.
Standard
Four questions with two partners and a concrete improvement.
Harder
Each pair proposes an improvement plus a way to check on the next trip whether it happened.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a short, flat loop or a seated debrief on a bench with a partner.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: written cards and a partner who knows how they communicate.
- Shy students: they choose their first partner.
Learning goals
- Analyze a trip by comparing the plan with what actually happened.
- Propose concrete, measurable improvements.
- Wind down through walking and conversation.
Equipment for a class of 25
- question cards: 15
Teacher tip
Collect the improvements in a shared class document and read them at the start of planning the next trip. The usual mistake is settling for 'it was good'; the questions should ask for examples.
