Volume Knob Intensity Jog
A running warm-up where the music volume sets the intensity: the louder it plays, the faster students move, and when it goes silent they do mobility. It teaches students to pace their effort, listen carefully and raise their heart rate gradually.
How to play
- Show the scale on the whiteboard or with your fingers: volume 1 walk, 2 easy jog, 3 comfortable run, 4 fast run with high knees; silence means mobility in place.
- All students travel around the outside of the court in the same direction. Start with 1 minute at volume 1 and 2.
- For 3 minutes, slowly turn the volume up and down without sudden jumps, holding each level for at least 20 seconds. Add two 15-second silences to loosen ankles, knees and shoulders.
- At level 3, students run the talk test: they should be able to say a short sentence to a partner without gasping.
- For 2 minutes, a student DJ controls the volume using the same scale; everyone else must react within 3 seconds.
- Finish walking at volume 1 and ask at what level each student felt fully warmed up.
Rules
- Always run in the same direction and pass on the outside.
- Change levels gradually, with no sudden stops.
- Safety: during silences, anyone who stops steps toward the inside of the court so they don't block runners.
- The DJ may change the volume by only one level at a time.
Variations
Easier
Use only three levels: walk, easy jog and silence for mobility.
Standard
Use four volume levels plus silence, with a student DJ at the end.
Harder
At level 4, add a change of direction every 10 steps and do walking lunges during the silences.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility follow the same scale in a wheelchair or with an adapted walk on the inside lane.
- For students with hearing loss, the DJ also holds up numbered cards from 1 to 4.
- Less-fit students may stay at level 3 even when level 4 is playing.
Learning goals
- Regulate running intensity with a simple scale.
- Use the talk test to judge personal effort.
- Respond quickly to changes in a sound cue.

Teacher tip
Use a speaker with a remote or keep your phone in hand so you can change the volume without walking over. If the playground is noisy, make the difference between levels very obvious.
