Volleyball Tournament with a Consolation Bracket
A 4-on-4 volleyball tournament run by a student committee, with a main and a consolation bracket so every team plays three games. Students practice scheduling, dividing up jobs and competing with respect.
How to play
- Make 6 teams of 4 and a committee of 1 or 2 students, who draw the main and consolation brackets on the whiteboard (4 min).
- Round 1: three games at once, to 15 or 6 minutes, with underhand serves.
- Winners move into the main bracket and losers into consolation; the committee announces matchups within 1 minute.
- Round 2: main semifinal and first consolation game; the winner with the best point differential gets a bye to the final (6 min).
- Round 3: final, consolation final and third-place game, all at once (6 min).
- Wrap-up: the committee reads the standings and each team applauds the opponent who competed best (3 min).
Rules
- Every team plays three games.
- The team sitting out that slot referees; if none, the committee does.
- When switching courts, walk around the nets carrying the ball.
- Committee scheduling decisions are not argued during the tournament.
Variations
Easier
The teacher prepares the bracket and the committee only records scores.
Standard
A student committee runs main and consolation brackets over three rounds.
Harder
The committee also assigns courts and referees so nobody officiates twice in a row.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: join the committee or play with one bounce allowed.
- Autism: get a printed bracket showing their possible path and a heads-up before each court change.
- Lower fitness: teams of 5 with a sub on every rotation.
Learning goals
- Design a bracket that guarantees playing time for all.
- Take on organizing roles in a tournament.
- Accept results and recognize opponents' effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- volleyballs: 4
- nets: 3
- whiteboard: 1
- markers: 2
- stopwatch: 1
Teacher tip
The bottleneck is changeover time: have the committee announce matchups before the round ends. Keep a backup bracket in case they get stuck.
