Volleyball Statues: Freeze the Skill and Fix It
In pairs, one student freezes in a volleyball skill position and the other checks two cues and helps fix it using only words. It's a slow cool-down that reviews the lesson's technique.
How to play
- Pairs spread out. The teacher explains that the statue doesn't move and the sculptor corrects with words only (1 min).
- The teacher names a skill: set or forearm pass. The statue freezes; the sculptor checks two cues and explains how to adjust. Switch roles (2 min).
- New skills: the underhand serve at contact and the blocking position with arms up. Switch roles (2 min).
- Trick statue: the statue builds in a deliberate mistake and the sculptor has ten seconds to spot it (2 min).
Rules
- The sculptor corrects with words; to move an arm, they ask permission first.
- The statue holds only what's comfortable, no forced positions.
- Talk quietly so you don't disturb other pairs.
- No comments about a partner's body, only about the skill.
Variations
Easier
Set and forearm pass positions only.
Standard
Four skills plus the trick statue.
Harder
The statue holds the skill with eyes closed and must feel the correction on their own.
Adaptations
- Students with visual impairments: the sculptor describes in detail and, with permission, guides the position with a light touch.
- Wheelchair users: arm and trunk positions from the chair.
- Students uncomfortable with touch: words only, and if they like, a mirror or reference photo.
Learning goals
- Recognize the correct positions for technical skills.
- Give and receive corrections respectfully.
- Slow down at the end of the lesson.
Teacher tip
Have two cues per skill ready so sculptors know what to look for. It's a good moment to catch errors that go unnoticed in game play.
