Volleyball Footwork Loop: Shuffle, Crossover, and Stop
A footwork loop built from volleyball movements: side shuffle, crossover step, backpedal, and stop. It prepares ankles and knees and teaches players to arrive at the ball balanced.

How to play
- Dynamic mobility around the court: butt kicks, high knees, easy lunges, and arm circles (2 min).
- Six groups, each with a 5 m cone square. Side one is a shuffle, side two a crossover, side three a backpedal, and side four a run with a two-foot stop (3 min).
- Add a ball: at the end of the square, a teammate tosses a low ball and the runner catches it in passing position, already stopped (3 min).
- Approach without a ball: two steps, two-foot stop, and a vertical jump swinging the arms back and up (2 min).
- Challenge: the full loop as fast as possible while stopping balanced at every cone; if you wobble, repeat that side (2 min).
Rules
- On the stop, knees bent and lined up over the feet, never caving in.
- Backpedal at a jog and look over your shoulder.
- One person per side; the next one starts when the previous runner reaches the second cone.
- Land the jump on both feet and absorb the landing.
Variations
Easier
No ball and a jogging pace throughout.
Standard
Full loop with the catch and the approach jump.
Harder
The tosser sends the ball to one side and the runner has to shuffle before catching it.
Adaptations
- Knee or ankle injury: walks the loop and handles tossing the balls.
- Wheelchair users: push forward, turn, and stop the chair, then catch the ball at the end.
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: start them with a tap on the shoulder or a visible signal.
Learning goals
- Master the basic volleyball footwork patterns.
- Arrive stopped and balanced before contacting the ball.
- Prevent injury with proper stopping and landing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 20
- volleyballs: 6
Teacher tip
Set up the six squares before class. The usual mistake is running into the ball and hitting it on the move: drill "get there first, then touch."
