Viewpoints Grid Improvisation
Using the Viewpoints improvisation technique, the group moves on a taped floor grid paying attention to tempo, duration, kinesthetic response, shape, and spatial relationship, without talking. It builds group listening, soft focus, and real-time composition.
How to play
- Tape a 5 x 5 grid on the floor. Students walk only on the lines and turn only at right angles (3 minutes).
- Introduce tempo: the teacher calls a number from 1 to 5 (very slow to very fast) and the whole group changes speed together. Then the group changes tempo with no call, just by sensing each other (4 minutes).
- Introduce duration and kinesthetic response: each person chooses how long to keep an action going and reacts to someone else's movement (if someone stops, someone else starts). Practice for 4 minutes.
- Introduce shape and spatial relationship: lines, curves, and angles with the body, and changing distances from classmates (4 minutes).
- Split the class in two: one half improvises for 3 minutes using all the viewpoints with music, while the other half watches for moments that looked choreographed. Switch.
- Discuss for 3 minutes the moments of spontaneous unison and what triggered them.
Rules
- Work in silence: communication is through the body only.
- At tempo 5, stay in control and never run toward another person.
- Use soft focus (peripheral vision) and keep the whole group in view.
- Observers hold their comments until the end.
Variations
Easier
Work only with tempo and spatial relationship, always called by the teacher.
Standard
Improvise with tempo, duration, response, shape, and spatial relationship.
Harder
Remove the grid and add gesture and the room's architecture as viewpoints.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the wheelchair travels along the widest lines, and tempo changes are shown with arms and torso.
- Visual impairment: work in pairs with shoulder contact, with the partner passing on tempo changes.
- Autism or shyness: the student can start as an observer and join the improvisation when ready.
Learning goals
- Develop group listening and peripheral awareness while moving.
- Improvise based on time and space parameters.
- Recognize how choreographic structures emerge in group improvisation.
Equipment for a class of 25
- masking tape: 2
- music
- speakers: 1
Teacher tip
Expect giggles and freezing up at first: go back to silent walking on the grid until the group settles.
