Useful Mistakes: Stretch and Turn the Miss into a Cue
A partner cool-down in which, while stretching, each student recalls one mistake from the lesson, classifies it and turns it into a short cue for next time. It frames mistakes as information for learning.
How to play
- In pairs on exercise mats, gentle quad and hamstring stretches while each student recalls one specific mistake from the lesson (2 min).
- Calf and hip stretches; each student tells their partner about the mistake and classifies it as technical, decision-making or attention (2 min).
- Lying back stretches; the partner helps turn the mistake into a cue of three words or fewer, such as 'elbow up, look' (2 min).
- Slow breathing and writing the cue on the worksheet, which is kept for the next lesson (2 min).
Rules
- Talk about the mistake, not the person: nobody laughs at a classmate's error.
- Hold every stretch without bouncing and without pain.
- The cue must say what to do, not what to avoid.
Variations
Easier
The teacher provides a list of sample cues to choose from.
Standard
Each student classifies their mistake and writes their own cue.
Harder
Students analyze two mistakes and separate the one they controlled from the one they didn't.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: stretches in the wheelchair with help from the partner.
- Autism: provide a worksheet with the three categories drawn so the student can point.
- Hearing impairment: the partner writes the cue on the worksheet instead of saying it.
Learning goals
- Interpret mistakes as useful information.
- Classify mistakes by their source.
- Write positive cues for the next practice.
Equipment for a class of 25
- exercise mats: 30
- worksheets: 30
Teacher tip
At the start of the next lesson, have students read their cue before the warm-up. It works better after technical drills than after very close games.
