Unbreakable Table Balance Wrestling
A partner ground-wrestling game: the 'table,' on hands and knees, tries to keep its base while the kneeling partner pushes and pulls to make another body part touch the mat. Students build core stability, weight shifting, controlled strength, and trust.
How to play
- Make a mat area and pair students of similar weight, one pair per mat; an odd student joins a rotating trio (2 min).
- Review the stop signal (two taps or 'stop') and the off-limits areas: head, neck, and joints.
- The table gets on hands and knees, hands under shoulders and knees under hips. The partner kneels beside it with hands on its back.
- On the whistle, the partner has 20 seconds to make the table touch down with an elbow, hip, side, or back by pushing or pulling the trunk, hips, or arms.
- The table may widen its base and lower its center of gravity but may not lie down. If it holds, the table scores; if it falls, the partner scores. Then switch roles.
- Play 4 duels per pair and switch partners three times. In the last round, the table plays on three points of contact.
Rules
- No touching the head or neck, pulling clothes or hair, or forcing joints.
- Push and pull gradually, with no striking or jumping.
- No one stands up during a duel.
- The stop signal is obeyed immediately.
Variations
Easier
The partner pushes with one hand, and the table holds for 15 seconds.
Standard
Four points of contact, 20 seconds, and pushing or pulling with both hands.
Harder
Two partners attack from opposite sides, or the table plays on three points of contact.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: be the table while seated with hands on the floor; an elbow down or tipping over loses.
- Discomfort with contact or autism: start as the table with a trusted partner, since that role controls the contact more.
- Strength: a weaker table may use a wider base or hold for only 10 seconds.
Learning goals
- Keep a stable base by adjusting weight distribution.
- Apply gradual, controlled force to a partner.
- Trust a partner and follow safety rules.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 12
Teacher tip
Tables that lock their elbows fall sooner: have them bend the arms slightly and lower the hips. Remind attackers that pulling toward themselves usually works better than pushing.
