Two-Ball Dribbling Partner Challenges
In pairs with two balls, one partner dribbles both at once following a challenge card that gets harder step by step, while the other watches, counts and gives tips; then they switch. Students work on weak-hand dribbling, two-hand coordination and peer assessment.
How to play
- Make pairs with two balls, a 6-challenge card and two cones 20 ft apart.
- Challenges 1 and 2: dribble both balls at the same time while standing, then alternate.
- Challenges 3 and 4: one ball high and one low; then dribble both while walking cone to cone.
- Challenges 5 and 6: jog to the far cone and back dribbling both, then circle a cone without losing either ball.
- The partner counts consecutive dribbles and checks off the challenge at 10; switch roles every 45 seconds.
- After about 12 minutes, each pair shows the class the hardest challenge they completed.
Rules
- If a ball gets away, walk to get it without cutting through other pairs.
- Each pair works in its own lane between its cones.
- Eyes up on the moving challenges.
Variations
Easier
First 10 dribbles with each hand separately, then both together.
Standard
Six progressive challenges, 45-second turns and 10 dribbles to pass each.
Harder
Add challenges calling out the number of fingers the partner shows.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student does the challenges seated or in a wheelchair, starting with one ball.
- Autism: the cards show a picture of each challenge and the order never changes.
- Lower skill: the student uses a bigger, softer ball in the weak hand.
Learning goals
- Dribble with the weak hand with control.
- Coordinate both hands in simultaneous and alternating dribbles.
- Watch a partner and assess their progress.
Equipment for a class of 25
- youth basketballs: 26
- cones: 26
- challenge cards: 13
Teacher tip
Balls must be properly inflated or the challenge becomes impossible. Ask for waist-high dribbles with the fingertips, not the palm.
