Turtle Neck, Giraffe Neck: Posture Wake-Up
A reaction warm-up that switches between the typical phone posture («turtle») and an aligned one («giraffe»). Students mobilize neck, shoulders, and spine while learning to feel the difference.

How to play
- Easy jog around the space. On «turtle», walk with head pushed forward and shoulders rounded; on «giraffe», grow tall, drop the shoulders, and jog lightly (2 min).
- Trick «Simon says»: the teacher calls one posture and shows the other. Anyone who slips does 3 chin tucks and keeps playing (2 min).
- In pairs, «the string»: one partner pulls an imaginary string from the top of the other's head and guides them walking in giraffe posture. Switch (2 min).
- Mobility on the move: slow neck turns, W-arms to open the chest, and shoulder shrugs (2 min).
Rules
- Neck turns are slow, and the head never drops all the way back.
- In «turtle», you walk; never run.
- Mistakes do not knock anyone out: do the task and keep going.
- Keep your distance from other pairs.
Variations
Easier
Voice cues only, no teacher tricks.
Standard
Simon says with tricks.
Harder
Add new cues: «owl» (head turn to one side) and «swan» (long neck with arms back) and speed it up.
Adaptations
- Visual impairment: the partner describes the posture and guides with a hand on the shoulder.
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: the teacher uses a gesture for each animal (hand like a shell, arm stretched up).
- Wheelchair users: do the postures and mobility seated, moving at their own pace.
Learning goals
- Activate the neck, shoulder, and upper-back muscles.
- Tell a rounded posture from an aligned one.
- Improve attention and reaction to cues.
Teacher tip
Works great before any lesson that follows hours of sitting. Correct without pointing at bodies: always talk about «turtle posture», never about anyone's back.
