True or False, Bike in Hand: Traffic Questions
A cool-down walking next to the bike while answering true-or-false statements about traffic rules. Heart rates drop while students review what they learned.
How to play
- The whole class walks pushing bikes or scooters along a wide lane between two cone lines (1 min).
- The teacher reads traffic statements; if you think it's true, walk to the right side; false, to the left (4 min).
- After each one, a volunteer explains why with a real example (2 min).
- Wrap-up: each person names the rule that surprised them most while parking their bike (1 min).
Rules
- Walk, never ride.
- No laughing at wrong answers: we explain them.
- Keep the bike on your right side.
- Stay one bike length behind the person ahead.
Variations
Easier
Simple statements ('a helmet protects your head').
Standard
Statements on signs, right-of-way and gear.
Harder
Trick statements about local laws, checked afterward on the official traffic website.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: statements shown on large cards.
- Wheelchair users: move in their chair just like everyone else.
- Students with low vision: a partner guides them toward the chosen side.
Learning goals
- Review key traffic rules actively.
- Back up answers with real examples.
- Settle down after the wheeled activity.
Equipment for a class of 25
- bicycles: 15
- cones: 4
Teacher tip
Useful examples: 'bikes have the right-of-way on the sidewalk' (false). Rules on things like headphones while riding vary by state and country, so check statements against current local law.
