Troika Russian Trio Dance
A Russian dance in groups of three that imitates a sleigh pulled by three horses. It includes light running forward, passing under arches made with arms, a circle of three and stamps. It's an energetic dance that builds cooperation, spatial awareness and endurance.
How to play
- A troika is a Russian sleigh pulled by three horses: trios side by side holding hands, like spokes of a circle facing counterclockwise (2 min).
- Part A: 16 light running steps forward; the middle and left dancers make an arch for the right dancer (8 steps), then the other side (5 min).
- Part B: circle of three, 12 steps left and three stamps; 12 steps right and three stamps (4 min).
- Practice A and B with slow, then normal music, keeping the same trio (4 min).
- Progression: at the end of B, the middle dancer goes under the partners' arms and runs to the next trio (3 min).
- Dance it three times in a row with a new middle dancer each time (2 min).
Rules
- Run lightly with short steps and don't pass other trios.
- Duck your head when going under the arch and don't let go of hands.
- During the progression, only the middle dancer runs; the others wait with free hands.
Variations
Easier
Skip the arches in Part A and just run forward and back, with no trio change.
Standard
Full dance with running, arches, circle of three and middle dancer change.
Harder
Each trio creates a third arch or figure of its own and teaches it to the trio it joins.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: a student using a wheelchair is the middle dancer, partners go under the arch of their arms, and the trio walks instead of running.
- Orientation or autism: mark the running direction with cones and keep the same trio for the first lesson.
- Fitness level: replace running with fast walking for students who tire.
Learning goals
- Coordinate traveling steps and arches in a group of three without letting go.
- Keep the rhythm of an energetic dance through several repetitions.
- Learn about a traditional Russian dance and its meaning.
Equipment for a class of 25
- music: 1
Teacher tip
Arches cause traffic jams at first, so walk them without music until they flow. You'll need a large space, because trios travel a long way during the run.
