Trio Pendulum: Trust and Catch
In groups of three, one student stiff as a plank leans gently forward and backward while the other two catch them. It activates the core and builds trust with a very controlled progression.

How to play
- Wrist, shoulder and trunk mobility, then practice the standing plank: glutes and abs tight (2 min).
- Teacher demo with two volunteers: spotters stand in a split stance, arms bent, hands on the shoulder blades (2 min).
- Trios: swings of only 4–6 inches forward and back using the call “Ready?” “Ready” “Falling” “Fall away” (3 min).
- Gradually increase the distance if the faller asks for it; rotate roles every minute (3 min).
- Wrap-up: each trio shares what made them feel safe (2 min).
Rules
- No one falls until both spotters say “Ready.”
- The faller decides the distance; never push or startle them.
- Spotters stay within one step of the faller.
- Work on mats and no joking around: one prank breaks the whole group's trust.
Variations
Easier
Forward lean only, with the spotters' hands already in contact.
Standard
Forward and backward swing at a short distance.
Harder
Circle of seven with the faller in the middle, always at a short distance.
Adaptations
- Anxious or hesitant students: may stay as spotters, or lean back only against a wall with the group's hands on them.
- Big size differences: the teacher builds trios balanced in strength and rotates roles with no comments about weight.
- Students with back injuries or dizziness: act as safety observer and give the start signal for one trio.
Learning goals
- Activate the core while keeping the body aligned.
- Build mutual trust through a communication protocol.
- Spot a classmate using a safe stance.
Equipment for a class of 25
- mats: 10
Teacher tip
Make the trios yourself and never allow “surprise trios.” Common mistake: spotting with straight arms; insist on bent elbows and a staggered stance.
