Traveling Hoop: Around the Circle Without Letting Go
In a circle holding hands, the group moves one or more hoops over everybody's body without letting go. It warms up the whole body and makes the group coordinate from minute one.

How to play
- Circles of 8 to 10 holding hands, with a hoop hanging between two arms. The hoop travels all the way around by passing over each person without breaking hands (2 min).
- Time one full lap. The group agrees on a strategy in 30 seconds and tries to beat its time (2 min).
- Two hoops start at the same spot going opposite ways. When they meet, one has to pass through the other (3 min).
- Merge two circles into one big circle with three hoops. Each time a hoop finishes a lap, the whole circle does 5 squats and 5 calf raises without letting go (3 min).
Rules
- Hands stay joined; if they break, the hoop goes back one person and play continues.
- Nobody yanks the arm of the person with the hoop: help it along, don't drag.
- Be careful with glasses, ponytails, and earrings when the hoop goes over the head.
- The record belongs to the group; nobody gets called out for being slow.
Variations
Easier
Big hoops, and players may let go with one finger to hook the hoop.
Standard
One hoop per circle, then two going opposite ways.
Harder
No talking, or use small 24-inch hoops.
Adaptations
- Students in wheelchairs: use a big hoop that only goes over head and arms; neighbors bring it closer.
- Visual impairment: the partner on the right calls out key words ("head," "leg," "yours").
- Students who don't want hand contact can link with a scarf or by the wrist.
Learning goals
- Warm up the body with big trunk, shoulder, and leg movements.
- Agree on a simple plan in very little time.
- Beat a group record through strategy, not rushing.
Equipment for a class of 25
- hoops: 6
Teacher tip
Hoops around 32–36 inches work best at first. The usual mistake is everyone shouting at once: only the person with the hoop talks.
