Trashcan Basketball Point Zones
A team throwing game where students shoot a foam ball into a wastebasket from 1-, 2- and 3-point lines taped on the floor. It builds accuracy, force control and smart decisions about how much risk to take on each shot.
How to play
- Spread out 5 wastebaskets and tape three lines in front of each: 5 ft (1 point), 8 ft (2) and 11 ft (3).
- Make 5 teams of 5 lined up behind their basket, with 3 foam balls per team (2 min).
- Taking turns, each player picks a line, shoots once and walks to get the ball; the team keeps score out loud. Rounds last 4 min.
- On the whistle, teams rotate to the basket on their right and play two more 4-minute rounds.
- In round four (4 min), each shooter calls their line first: if they make it, the points count double.
- Final tally (2 min): the team with the most points wins and each student shares which line worked best.
Rules
- Shoot from behind your chosen line without stepping on it.
- Get your ball only after the next teammate has shot, and always walk.
- A ball that bounces on the floor first does not count.
- Only shoot at the basket, never at a person.
Variations
Easier
Move the lines to 3, 6 and 9 ft and use wider boxes.
Standard
Lines at 5, 8 and 11 ft with a free one-hand shot.
Harder
Shoot with the non-dominant hand for a bonus point.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student shoots seated from any line and a teammate returns the ball.
- Visual impairment: a partner claps next to the basket and a high-contrast ball is used.
- Skill level: add a 6-ft line worth 2 points.
Learning goals
- Adjust throwing force and arc to the distance.
- Choose a shooting distance based on their own skill and the score.
- Take turns and keep score honestly.
Equipment for a class of 25
- wastebaskets: 5
- foam balls: 15
- masking tape: 2
Teacher tip
Push desks aside and keep baskets away from windows and shelves. The most common mistake is a flat, stiff shot, so cue a high, soft rainbow.
