Training methods jigsaw
Using the jigsaw strategy, each expert group learns one training method (continuous, fartlek, interval, circuit or muscular endurance) and then teaches and leads it in their home group. Every student practices all five methods and understands how they differ.
How to play
- Form five home groups of five; each member gets a task card with a different method (2 min).
- Students with the same method meet as expert groups, read the card and plan a 4-minute practice with the equipment in their area (6 min).
- Experts return to their home groups; in turn, each one explains the method in 30 seconds and leads the 4-minute practice (five 4-minute turns: 20 min).
- During each practice, the rest of the group takes mental note of the duration, intensity and recovery for that method.
- Home groups move to a new area on the teacher's signal to use each method's equipment.
- Wrap-up: each group fills in a five-method chart with each method's main goal (2 min).
Rules
- The expert is responsible for safety and form during their practice.
- Each practice lasts exactly 4 minutes so everyone gets a turn.
- Listen to the expert without interrupting and ask questions at the end.
- Every practice must offer an easier option.
Variations
Easier
Use only three methods (continuous, interval and circuit) with 5-minute practices.
Standard
Five methods, expert groups and 4-minute practices in home groups.
Harder
At the end, each home group combines two methods into a 10-minute workout and presents it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: their card includes seated options for the method they teach.
- Shyness: they can lead using a script card and a demo prepared with their expert group.
- Low fitness level: they choose the easier option in each practice and stay involved.
Learning goals
- Tell apart the main fitness training methods.
- Explain and lead a short practice for classmates.
- Work as a team while taking responsibility for their own learning.

Teacher tip
Prepare clear cards: method, goal, sample practice and timing. Visit each expert group to correct mistakes before they spread.
