Trail Blazes: Follow the Red and White
A warm-up where the class moves by following the real waymarks used on Spain's marked trails. It gets bodies moving and teaches students to read trail signs before their first hike.
PhaseWarm-up
Duration10 min
Ages12–16
SpaceOutdoor yard
Equipmentcones, Trail marking cards
IntensityModerate
How to play
- Show the cards: two parallel stripes mean keep going, bent stripes mean turn, and an X means wrong way (2 min).
- Free jog around the schoolyard; the teacher holds up a card and everyone reacts: straight ahead, turn to the side shown, or turn around (3 min).
- Groups of five follow a cone course with cards taped on; the front student reads the blaze out loud and leads, and the leader changes at every cone (3 min).
- Trail colors: the teacher shows red and white, yellow and white, or green and white, and the group calls out long, short, or local trail while jogging (2 min).
Rules
- Jog in the direction the card shows and don't cut through other groups.
- On an X, walk through the turn before jogging again.
- The leader looks ahead, not down at the card, while moving.
- No one passes the leader on the course.
Variations
Easier
Just two blazes, keep going and wrong way, all at a walk.
Standard
Three blazes at an easy jog with a rotating leader.
Harder
The teacher shows two cards in a row and the group must do them in order.
Adaptations
- Low vision: large high-contrast cards, and the leader says the blaze out loud.
- Deaf students: works the same since the signals are visual; agree on a sign to start and stop.
- Limited mobility: leads from the middle of the course, holding up the cards for their group.
Learning goals
- Recognize the keep-going, turn, and wrong-way blazes.
- Tell the colors of long, short, and local trails apart.
- Warm up the body gradually.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cones: 16
- trail blaze cards: 20
Teacher tip
Make the cards from poster board and colored tape; laminated, they last for years. Common mistake: mixing up the turn and the X, so draw the angle very clearly.
