Traffic Light Balloon Racket Drill
Each student keeps a balloon in the air with a racket and changes the type of hit based on the color of the cone the teacher holds up. Students practice racket control, forehand and backhand hits, and paying attention to visual cues.
How to play
- Each student sets a hoop on the floor as their home spot, about 6 ft apart, and grabs a balloon and a mini racket (2 min).
- Explain the signals: green cone means forehand taps with the palm facing up; yellow means backhand taps with the back of the hand up; red means alternate forehand and backhand.
- Phase 1 inside the hoop: the teacher changes colors every 30–40 seconds and students count their taps in a row without dropping the balloon (4 min).
- Phase 2 on the move: when the teacher raises two cones at once, everyone travels around the room tapping and returns to an open hoop when the cones come down (4 min).
- Phase 3 in pairs: one student is the traffic light with the cones and the other taps; switch roles every minute (5 min).
Rules
- Safety: walk while traveling and keep your eyes on the balloon and your classmates.
- Always hit the balloon with the racket, never with your hand.
- If the balloon drops, pick it up and restart your count without stopping anyone else.
Variations
Easier
Use only green and yellow, and allow the balloon to rest on the racket for a moment.
Standard
Three colors, a change every 30–40 seconds, and a traveling phase.
Harder
Add a blue cone that means clap or touch the floor between every tap.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the task seated, and during the traveling phase move with support or in a wheelchair through a clear area.
- Visual impairment: replace colors with short words or sounds, such as one clap for forehand and two for backhand.
- Skill level: use a large-head racket or a bigger, slower balloon.
Learning goals
- Control a balloon with forehand and backhand hits.
- Respond quickly to changing visual cues.
- Stay focused to beat a personal record.

Teacher tip
Blow up the balloons ahead of time and keep extras, because some will pop. Coach the ready position: racket in front of the body, knees bent, and soft hits up, not forward.
