How to play
- Each group of four draws a long hopscotch of separate boxes; hoops mark the start (2 min).
- Hop the course on one foot, come back on the other, no rush (2 min).
- Triple jump sequence: two contacts on the same foot and the third on the other, repeated along the court (2 min).
- Game: the teacher calls 'right' or 'left' and you must start the sequence on that foot (2 min).
- Wrap-up: the longest run of the court the whole group does in a row without a mistake (1 min).
Rules
- One person per court; wait behind the hoop.
- Wrong foot? Walk out the side and rejoin the line.
- Low, skimming hops, not high ones.
- No pushing in line.
Variations
Easier
Boxes close together and a wall to touch for balance.
Standard
Boxes one normal step apart.
Harder
Boxes spaced wider and two cycles in a row.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard of hearing: the teacher raises a red (right) or blue (left) scarf.
- Poor balance: court along a wall or holding a partner's hand.
- Injured knee: draws new courts and counts the group's misses.
Learning goals
- Activate feet and ankles with single-leg hops.
- Learn the triple jump contact sequence.
- React to a call by changing the starting foot.
Equipment for a class of 25
- chalk: 8
- hula hoops: 7
Teacher tip
Have students say 'same, same, other' out loud as they hop; it locks in the rhythm better than any explanation. Common mistake: switching feet on the second hop.
