Toy Shop at Midnight
A classic drama game in which students are toys in a shop that come alive at midnight once the toymaker goes to bed. Each toy moves in its own way and freezes when the toymaker returns, building imitation, movement qualities and self-control.
How to play
- Introduce five toys (2 min): toy soldier (stiff steps), rag doll (floppy), robot (right-angle turns), spinning top (turning in place) and bouncy ball (gentle bounces).
- Each student picks one and stands still on the "shelf" by the wall. The teacher is the toymaker who closes the shop.
- One whistle blast for midnight and the music starts: the toys come alive and move around the shop for 30-40 seconds.
- When the music stops, the toymaker returns and everyone freezes. Anyone caught moving gets "wound up" with a shoulder tap and switches toys.
- After 4-5 rounds, call new toys (jack-in-the-box, dinosaur, ballerina) for everyone to imitate together.
- Finale (2 min): morning comes and the toys slowly return to the shelf and fall asleep.
Rules
- When the music plays, move like your toy; when it stops, total freeze.
- Toys do not touch or bump each other: everyone protects their own space.
- Anyone caught moving is never out; they just change toys.
Variations
Easier
Everyone imitates the same toy each round, led by the teacher.
Standard
Each student chooses a toy and the toymaker winds up anyone who moves.
Harder
In pairs, students invent a new two-person toy (for example, a train with a caboose) and present it.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: choose toys expressed through arms and trunk (robot, puppet), or let the student be the toymaker.
- Hearing impairment: besides stopping the music, flick the lights to signal that the toymaker is back.
- Fitness: alternate fast and slow toys so the effort is not continuous.
Learning goals
- Imitate different toys by changing movement qualities: stiff, floppy, fast, slow.
- Control the body to switch from movement to stillness.
- Enjoy a group drama activity while respecting others' space.

Teacher tip
Play up a sleepy, absent-minded toymaker: kids love trying not to giggle as you walk by. Use music-box music for the night and something faster for the toy dance.
