Towel Slide Stretches for Inner Thighs and Hamstrings
With a towel under one foot on the smooth gym floor, students slide the leg very slowly out to the side and back to stretch the inner thighs, hamstrings, and hip flexors. The controlled slide lets them regulate range of motion and practice body control.
How to play
- Each student places a folded towel on the smooth floor, puts the right foot on it, and moves two yards away from others (0.5 min).
- Inner thighs: with hands on hips, slide the towel to the right while bending the left knee until you feel a pull inside the thigh; hold 15 seconds and slide back slowly; three times (1.5 min).
- Hamstrings: with the foot on the towel in front, slide forward with the leg straight while bending the back leg and pushing the hips back, flat back, 15 seconds; three times (1.5 min).
- Hip flexors: slide the towel back into a low lunge, rest hands on the front knee, and hold 20 seconds, feeling the front of the hip (1 min).
- Switch feet and repeat all three slides with the left leg (3 min).
- When finished, pick up the towel, shake it out, and walk slowly to the line for one minute (0.5 min).
Rules
- Slides are slow: count to five going out and coming back.
- The bent knee points the same direction as the foot.
- Safety: if the towel slips too much, shorten the range and put a hand on the wall.
Variations
Easier
Work next to the wall with one hand on it, inner thighs and hamstrings only.
Standard
Three slides per leg in three directions, holding 15 to 20 seconds.
Harder
Add a trunk rotation toward the front leg in the low lunge while keeping balance.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do it seated on a chair, sliding the towel out and forward with the foot.
- Visual impairment: work along the wall and the teacher gives direction with a touch cue.
- Fitness level: students with weaker balance hold a partner's hands while sliding.
Learning goals
- Stretch the inner thighs, hamstrings, and hip flexors with control.
- Regulate range of motion based on how the body feels.
- Improve body control during slow single-leg movements.
Equipment for a class of 25
- towels: 25
Teacher tip
Check first that the floor is dry and clean; on rubber flooring towels won't slide, so use a plastic bag underneath.
