Tough Question Drill with a Three-Breath Reset
In pairs, students rehearse what to do when a test question makes them freeze: a partner reads a surprise question from a card, they do a three-breath reset and then answer calmly. It builds nerve control under pressure and decision-making.
How to play
- Prepare cards with easy but unexpected questions, such as 'Name five leg muscles' or 'Give three volleyball rules'; form pairs sitting face to face (1 min).
- Teach the three-breath reset: first breath, drop the shoulders; second, plant the feet on the floor; third, say silently 'I'll start with what I know' (1 min).
- Practice it twice as a whole class without cards, following your voice (1 min).
- Drill round: A reads a card to B in a serious test tone; B does the reset before answering and gives whatever answer they can in 30 seconds, even if partial; then switch (3 min, about three cards each).
- After each answer, the asker says whether they saw their partner take the three breaths and whether they answered more calmly.
- 2-minute wrap-up: discuss which part of the reset helped most and point out they can use it on a free throw or a penalty kick too.
Rules
- The goal is practicing the reset, not getting the answer right.
- The asker doesn't tease or rush their partner.
- Questions are only about PE or simple general knowledge, never personal.
Variations
Easier
Do the reset with your voice guiding the whole class before each card.
Standard
Do the reset independently before answering each card.
Harder
Add controlled pressure: the partner counts the 30 seconds out loud during the answer.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility do it seated as is; the feet step can be swapped for pressing the hands on the desk.
- For students with dyslexia, the partner reads the card aloud and short answers are fine.
- For students with strong test anxiety, let them only be the asker in the first round.
Learning goals
- Use a short calming technique in a pressure situation.
- Answer in an organized way when an unexpected question appears.
- Transfer nerve management from sports to schoolwork.

Teacher tip
Keep the questions easy: we want surprise, not difficulty. Prepare at least three cards per pair and collect them at the end to reuse.
