Tip or Hit: Read the Attacker
In 2v2, the hitter chooses between a soft fingertip tip just over an imaginary block or a hard hit deep, and the defending pair has to read it. It builds attacking decisions and defensive anticipation.
How to play
- Demo of the tip (ball pushed softly with the finger pads, just over the net) and the deep hit, plus the tells for each: slowing arm, shoulders, eyes (4 min).
- Groups of four, two per side. The setter tosses high and the hitter chooses tip or hit; the defending pair starts deep and tries to dig it. Switch every four attacks (8 min).
- Defenders must call "short!" or "deep!" before the hitter makes contact; if they're right, they score a point even if they don't reach it (6 min).
- 2v2 with free attacking: a point won with a tip or a hit the defense didn't read counts double (10 min).
- Group reflection: which of the hitter's moves gave it away? (2 min).
Rules
- Controlled hitting: no hitting at anyone's face from within 3 m.
- Defenders wait in a low stance and don't dive on the floor.
- Roles rotate on a fixed schedule, not based on who plays best.
- Each group stays on its own court, at least 2 m apart.
Variations
Easier
The attacker throws instead of hitting: a short or a deep throw.
Standard
Tip or hit off a tossed set, with the defender's call.
Harder
An overhead set instead of a toss, and a jump attack.
Adaptations
- Shoulder injury: attacks with tips only or plays setter.
- Fear of the ball: defends with a soft ball or acts as a scout who notes which move gives away each attack.
- Limited mobility: defends a short zone by the net, where tips land.
Learning goals
- Choose the type of attack based on where the defenders are.
- Anticipate the hitter's intention by reading their body.
- Accept decision errors as part of learning.

Teacher tip
At this level many students only hit hard; award bonus points for tips so they try them. Stronger groups can move to overhead sets from the start.
