Tightrope Walkers: Heel-to-Toe Balance Challenges
Each student walks the court lines like a tightrope walker, heel to toe, tackling finer and finer balance challenges. It trains dynamic balance at a slow pace.

How to play
- Each student picks a court line with nobody within three meters (1 min).
- Heel-to-toe walk, arms out, eyes forward, there and back (2 min).
- Add a beanbag on the head and, halfway along, a half turn without dropping it (2 min).
- Final challenge: three steps with eyes closed, then open them and check you're still on the line (2 min).
- Everyone walks a line back to the box to drop off their beanbag (1 min).
Rules
- One student per line; if two meet, the one who arrived second stops.
- Eyes closed for three steps only, with arms out.
- If you lose balance, step off and get back on: nobody is out.
Variations
Easier
Normal steps on the line, no beanbag.
Standard
Heel to toe, beanbag on head and a half turn.
Harder
Backward heel to toe and five steps with eyes closed.
Adaptations
- Visually impaired students: follow a rope taped on the floor they can feel with their foot, or walk with a buddy alongside.
- Wheelchair users: follow the line with one wheel on it and the beanbag on their lap, turning in place at the midpoint.
- Nervous students: can walk a line near the wall and touch it when needed.
Learning goals
- Improve dynamic balance.
- Focus on a slow, precise task.
- Lower heart rate after effort.
Equipment for a class of 25
- beanbags: 30
Teacher tip
Any court line works, or a strip of masking tape on the floor. The typical mistake is staring at the feet: have them fix their eyes on a point at the end of the line.
