Tie the Knot Without Letting Go
Each group holds a rope with both hands and must tie a knot in the middle without anyone letting go or sliding their hands, which means stepping over and under classmates. Students work on problem-solving and communication.
How to play
- Make four groups of six. Each group holds a 13- to 16-foot rope with both hands, spread along it; from now on, hands stay where they are (2 min).
- Challenge 1: tie an overhand knot in the middle of the rope without letting go. If anyone lets go, undo what you did and start over (4 min).
- If a group gets stuck, give a hint: 'Your bodies make the knot: someone has to go through a loop' (1 min).
- Challenge 2: untie the knot under the same rule, then tie two knots in a row (4 min).
- Final class challenge: two groups join on a long rope and tie one knot among twelve people, with a 3-minute time limit (3 min).
- Share-out: who suggested the idea that worked, and how did the group listen to everyone? (1 min).
Rules
- Hands never let go or slide along the rope.
- Step over or under the rope slowly, without jumping.
- Explain an idea out loud to the group before trying it.
- Safety: nobody yanks the rope while someone is stepping through.
Variations
Easier
Groups of four with a 10-foot rope and one free hand each.
Standard
Groups of six, both hands fixed, and one overhand knot.
Harder
The challenge is done in total silence, using only gestures.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student holds one end of the rope while others move around them, or directs the solution.
- Shyness or autism: the student is the 'architect' who suggests ideas in writing or with drawings.
- Fitness level: this is low intensity; add a jog to a cone after each knot to raise activity.
Learning goals
- Solve a movement problem with several possible solutions as a group.
- Suggest ideas and listen before acting.
- Move carefully while in contact with classmates.
Equipment for a class of 25
- ropes: 4
- long rope: 2
Teacher tip
Don't give the answer too soon: the learning is in the discussion. If a group finishes quickly, have them explain it to another group without touching that group's rope.
