Three-Plane Mobility Warm-Up
A dynamic mobility routine where students learn the three planes of motion, sagittal, frontal and transverse, and move the hips, shoulders and spine through each one. It prepares the body for multidirectional sport movements and connects practice to anatomy.
How to play
- Explain the planes with simple gestures: sagittal, forward and back; frontal, side to side; transverse, rotation. Students copy each with their arms while saying its name (1 min).
- Partner leg swings with one hand on a partner's shoulder: 8 forward and back, 8 side to side and 8 across the body with a hip turn, on each leg (2 min).
- In 15 m (about 50 ft) lanes marked with cones: forward lunges down and lateral lunges back; then rotational lunges at 45 degrees down and a jog back (3 min).
- Shoulders and trunk: 8 forward and backward arm circles, 8 open-arm hugs and 8 trunk rotations with elbows bent at chest height (1 min).
- Review game: the teacher performs a movement and students run to the cone for that plane, 10 m away: red for sagittal, blue for frontal and yellow for transverse. Eight movements (2 min).
Rules
- Keep every movement controlled, with no bouncing at the end range.
- Increase range a little with each rep.
- Safety: in lunges the front knee tracks over the foot and the chest stays tall.
Variations
Easier
Work standing with no lunges, one plane at a time, with the teacher naming it.
Standard
Leg swings, lunges in lanes and shoulder and trunk mobility in all three planes, plus the review game.
Harder
Lunges in all three planes with arms straight overhead and a two-second pause at the bottom.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated arm, shoulder, neck and trunk work in all three planes; in the review game the student points to the cone instead of running.
- Hearing impairment: each plane has a fixed gesture, arm forward, arm out to the side and a wrist turn, always shown with the name.
- Lower fitness: use short lunges with hands on the thighs for support if needed.
Learning goals
- Identify the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes in your own movements.
- Move the hips, shoulders and spine in every direction.
- Prepare the body for the turns and cuts found in sports.
Equipment for a class of 25
- colored cones: 15
Teacher tip
Link each plane to a sport: sprinting is sagittal, basketball defense is frontal and throwing is transverse. The most common error in the lateral lunge is bending the knee of the leg that should stay straight.
