Three Levels, One Voice: Lead While Offering Options
In groups, students lead a short group-fitness block where every exercise is offered at three levels at once, using language that doesn't label anyone. It builds a core instructor skill: getting the whole room working, each person at their own level.
How to play
- Teacher demo: a 2-min block with three levels and inclusive language ("option 1, option 2, option 3," never "for the weaker ones") followed by a quick discussion (3 min).
- Prep in groups of 4: a 4-min block with three exercises, each with three options, and roles for who cues, who demos and who scans the room (8 min).
- Simultaneous classes in two halves of the gym: each group leads its block for half the class while an observer tallies how often options are offered and whether anyone stops moving (16 min).
- Data debrief: each group gets its tally and picks one phrase that worked well for offering levels (3 min).
Rules
- Options are named with numbers or colors, never ability labels.
- The lead instructor demos the middle level and a group member shows the other two.
- Only exercises with no fall risk and no heavy equipment.
- Participants pick their option and can switch at any time.
Variations
Easier
3-min blocks with two exercises and two options.
Standard
4-min blocks with three exercises and three options.
Harder
Participants hold a secret card (sore knee, first day, advanced) and the instructors must spot it and adjust on the fly.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the instructing group adds signs with the option number and clear gestures.
- Limited mobility: each group must include a seated option in at least one exercise, and the student can be the one who demos it.
- Public speaking anxiety: the student can demo or scan the room instead of cueing out loud.
Learning goals
- Lead a group-fitness block with simultaneous levels.
- Use inclusive, non-comparative language.
- Learn professional skills of a fitness instructor.
Equipment for a class of 25
- speakers: 2
- planning sheets: 7
- stopwatch: 1
- mats: 30
Teacher tip
Two small speakers are enough to split the two halves; keep the volume low so voices carry. The usual mistake is offering levels only at the start: observers should also count reminders mid-exercise.
