Three-Direction Rope Strap Leg Stretch
A lying stretch where a jump rope works as a strap to move the straight leg in three directions: up, out to the side, and across the body. Students stretch the hamstrings, inner thighs, and outer hip while keeping the back flat on the mat.
How to play
- Each student sets out a mat, folds a jump rope in half, and lies face up with both legs straight (1 min).
- Loop the rope around the sole of the right foot, hold one end in each hand, and raise the straight leg until you feel a pull behind the thigh; hold 30 seconds with the other leg on the floor (1 min).
- Move both ends to the right hand and slowly let the leg fall out to the side, keeping the left hip on the mat; 30 seconds for the inner thigh (1 min).
- Switch the rope to the left hand and take the leg across the body to the left with shoulders down; 30 seconds for the outer hip (1 min).
- Return to center, lower the leg with control, and compare how both legs feel for a few seconds (0.5 min).
- Repeat all three directions with the left leg (3 min).
Rules
- The stretching leg stays straight without locking the knee.
- Back and head always stay on the mat.
- Safety: if you feel tingling or pain behind the knee, ease off the rope and lower the leg a little.
Variations
Easier
The non-stretching leg stays bent with the foot flat on the floor.
Standard
Three directions held 30 seconds each with the other leg straight on the floor.
Harder
After each stretch, press the leg into the rope for 5 seconds, relax, and gain a little more range.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: students who can't lie down do it seated on a chair with the leg resting on another chair and the rope around the foot.
- Autism: picture cards for each direction and a visible timer so they know how much time is left.
- Fitness level: students who are very tight may bend the knee slightly to feel the stretch without forcing it.
Learning goals
- Stretch the hamstrings, inner thighs, and hips with safe technique.
- Control range of motion with the rope while keeping the back flat.
- Compare how the right and left legs feel.
Equipment for a class of 25
- jump ropes: 25
- yoga mats: 25
Teacher tip
Many students lift the opposite hip off the floor when moving the leg out or across; cue them to keep it pinned.
