Three-Color Soccer Keep-Away
Three teams of four play in a rectangle: two colors join forces to keep the ball while the third color presses to win it. Whoever loses the ball switches to defense instantly, so players must react fast and choose the right pass.
How to play
- Set up two 20 x 15 yard rectangles and form three teams of 4 in each one with three pinnie colors; any extra student plays as a neutral who always attacks.
- At the start, two colors play together (8 vs 4) and the third color presses to win the ball.
- If a defender steals it or the ball goes out, the color of the last attacker to touch it becomes the defending team and the stealing team joins the attack.
- Every 8 passes in a row earn a point for both attacking colors; every steal earns a point for the defending color.
- Play 3 rounds of 4 minutes with a 1-minute active rest in which each team agrees on how to spread out more.
- At the end, total each color's points and challenge the class to cut down on turnovers in the final round.
Rules
- The role switch is immediate; no one waits for the teacher's signal.
- Tackle from the front or side only: no tackling from behind or with studs up.
- Passes stay on the ground or at waist height, never over anyone's head.
- The neutral player never defends and is limited to two touches.
Variations
Easier
Keep spare balls next to the field for quick restarts and allow unlimited touches.
Standard
Play 8 vs 4 with immediate transitions and a point for every 8 passes.
Harder
Limit players to two touches and require the eighth pass to reach a player inside a 3 x 3 yard target zone.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: the student plays as a fixed neutral on the sideline, receiving and passing with hands or feet, and no one may steal from them.
- Deaf or hard of hearing: use very distinct pinnie colors and a visual signal, such as raising a cone, to start and stop each round.
- Fitness level: students with less endurance can sub out every 2 minutes for a teammate of the same color.
Learning goals
- Decide which teammate to pass to based on where the defenders are.
- React to a turnover by switching from offense to defense without pausing.
- Communicate with teammates to use the whole space.
Equipment for a class of 25
- soccer balls: 6
- colored pinnies: 24
- cones: 8
Teacher tip
Expect confusion during the first switches: freeze play two or three times and ask out loud which color is defending now. Keep spare balls by each field.
