The Sneaky Warm-Up: Spot the Three Mistakes
The teacher leads a warm-up with three hidden mistakes, and the class has to catch them while moving. Students really warm up and learn what makes a warm-up good or bad.

How to play
- The teacher starts correctly: easy jog plus ankle, knee and hip mobility (2 min).
- Mistake one: an all-out sprint before any activation. Whoever spots it raises a hand; explain the problem and swap it for build-ups at 60% (2 min).
- Mistake two: long static stretches with a cold body. Students catch it and replace it with dynamic stretches on the move (2 min).
- Mistake three: drills unrelated to the lesson, such as arms only before soccer. The class suggests two sport-specific drills and does them (2 min).
- Jog in place in a circle: three volunteers sum up the mistakes and how to fix them (2 min).
Rules
- To flag a mistake, raise your hand; no shouting.
- The 'sneaky' drills are always done gently: no one sprints all out or forces a stretch.
- If you don't see the mistake, keep moving; the whole class doesn't stop.
- Respect every classmate's explanation, even if it's wrong.
Variations
Easier
The teacher gives a hint before each mistake ('watch what comes next').
Standard
Three hidden mistakes, no hints.
Harder
Five mistakes, including wrong phase order and wrong duration.
Adaptations
- Students who are deaf or hard of hearing: the teacher always faces the group and backs up each cue with a gesture; the mistake signal is a raised hand, which is visual.
- Students with a leg injury: they do the arm and trunk work only and act as lead spotters.
- Shy students: they can whisper the mistake to a partner instead of raising a hand.
Learning goals
- Recognize common warm-up mistakes.
- Explain why a warm-up should be gradual and sport-specific.
- Get the body ready safely.
Teacher tip
Plan the mistakes ahead and don't make them too obvious. Students often think stretching a lot is warming up; use that moment to explain it calmly.
