The Mystery Bag: Guess the Gear by Touch
Each group gets a closed bag of small PE gear and must identify it by touch only. It sharpens tactile perception and closes the lesson calmly in a circle.
How to play
- Groups of five sit in a circle. Each group gets a cloth bag with five small items inside (1 min).
- The bag goes hand to hand; each person puts both hands in without looking and quietly names one item they think they touched (2 min).
- Second round: describe an item without naming it (shape, weight, texture) and the group guesses (2 min).
- Empty the bag and check. Link each item to a game or sport where it's used (2 min).
- One group member walks the bag and all the gear back to its place (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody looks inside the bag until the end.
- Only soft gear with no sharp parts goes in.
- Wait your turn; the bag is handed, not thrown.
Variations
Easier
Three very different items.
Standard
Five pieces of PE gear.
Harder
Similar items (tennis ball and foam ball, rope and elastic band) and only one hand inside.
Adaptations
- Blind or visually impaired students: this is a chance to shine; they can be the one describing items to the group.
- Students with touch sensitivity: may feel through the cloth or act as moderator.
- Students with limited hand mobility: a classmate holds the bag open while they explore.
Learning goals
- Sharpen tactile perception.
- Describe objects with precise words.
- Calm down as a group.

Teacher tip
Prepare the bags before class with gear you have duplicates of; cloth tote bags or pillowcases work. Vary the contents between groups so answers don't get passed around.
