The Bertsolari Walk: Four Lines to Close the Session

How to play
- Intro: in the Basque Country, bertsolaris improvise rhymed verses in front of an audience, often in town squares and at festivals where pelota and rural sports also take place. Today we'll do a simple version in English (2 min).
- Walk in threes around the schoolyard: the teacher gives a topic (best point, funniest mistake, what the team learned) and the trio hunts for rhyming words (3 min).
- Compose on the move: each trio creates four lines with lines two and four rhyming (3 min).
- Circle recital: one speaker per trio recites or sings the verse; the others respond with a slow clap (2 min).
Rules
- Verses are about the session, never about anyone's looks.
- Compose while walking at an easy pace, no running.
- Every verse gets silence and applause, no mocking.
- Reciting is voluntary within the trio.
Variations
Easier
Two lines, any rhyme.
Standard
Four lines, rhyming on lines two and four.
Harder
Four lines ending with a word chosen by another trio.
Adaptations
- Hearing impairment: the trio writes its verse on a phone or paper and another student reads it aloud.
- Limited mobility: the trio composes at a fixed spot and the other groups pass by during the walk.
- English learners: may compose in their own language and explain the meaning afterward.
Learning goals
- Lower arousal by walking and talking.
- Learn about bertsolaritza as part of Basque culture.
- Reflect on the session creatively.
Teacher tip
Have a few easy-to-rhyme words ready in case a trio gets stuck. If you have Spanish or Basque speakers, invite them to write their verse in that language.
