The Agreement Rope: One Knot per Promise
The class walks while passing a long rope hand to hand, and anyone who wants ties a knot while stating an agreement for the group. The rope is stored and comes out again for every challenge this term.
How to play
- Whole class in a circle walking slowly; the long rope passes hand to hand while students recall a moment from the lesson out loud (2 min).
- Anyone who wants stops the rope, ties a simple knot, and states a group agreement: "we listen before we try," "nobody gets left out"... (3 min).
- Everyone holds the rope and walks together to the equipment room without letting it touch the floor (2 min).
- The teacher reads back the agreements and the rope is coiled and stored (1 min).
Rules
- Nobody has to tie a knot; you can pass.
- Agreements are stated positively and without naming classmates.
- Don't pull or tug the rope while walking.
Variations
Easier
The teacher suggests three agreements and students choose which to tie.
Standard
Students' own agreements.
Harder
Each knot must be different (overhand, figure eight, bowline) if they've learned them.
Adaptations
- Wheelchair users: carry the rope at their hand height, and the group matches their pace.
- Hearing impairment: a classmate writes each agreement on a whiteboard that travels with the group.
- Students who freeze when speaking to the group: write their agreement and the teacher reads it.
Learning goals
- Build class norms from shared experience.
- Cool down with a shared task.
- Feel part of the group at the start of the year.
Equipment for a class of 25

Teacher tip
Write the agreements in your notes and bring them up next time the rope comes out. It works especially well in the first weeks of school.
