The Agreement Line: Take a Spot and Explain It
The teacher reads statements about the lesson and each student stands on a long rope between "strongly agree" and "strongly disagree." Students reflect on class by moving and hearing different views.
How to play
- Lay a long rope on the floor with a cone at each end: one is "strongly agree," the other "strongly disagree" (1 min).
- The teacher reads a statement ("Everyone touched the ball today," "I helped someone"). Each student walks to the spot on the rope that fits them (2 min).
- Two or three volunteers from different spots explain their position in one sentence; others listen without arguing (2 min).
- Repeat with two more statements, including one suggested by students (2 min).
- Wrap-up: the group agrees on one improvement for next class and two students coil the rope (1 min).
Rules
- No position is better than another; respect everyone's spot.
- Only the person with the turn speaks; listen, don't argue.
- Statements are about the class and the game, never about a specific person.
Variations
Easier
Just three zones: agree, in between, disagree.
Standard
A continuous line with three statements and volunteers.
Harder
Each student must persuade someone on the opposite side to move one step, using arguments only.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard-of-hearing students: statements are also shown on a whiteboard or card.
- Wheelchair users: lay the rope on a smooth, clear area.
- Shy students: can take a spot without explaining, or leave a written comment at the end.
Learning goals
- Assess the lesson with your own judgment.
- Listen to and respect different opinions.
- Suggest improvements for the group.
Equipment for a class of 25
- long ropes: 1
- cones: 2
Teacher tip
Prepare statements ahead: two about getting along and one about content. If everyone clusters at one end, ask whoever is farthest from the crowd; they often give the most useful feedback.
