Test-Day Self-Talk Flip Cards
In pairs, students turn typical negative thoughts before a test or a game into realistic phrases that help them act, and write them on a card to keep. It builds positive self-talk and nerve management while doing a gentle stretch.
How to play
- Hand out half a sheet of cardstock and a marker to each student and form pairs sitting on the floor facing each other (1 min).
- Read examples of drag-down thoughts ('I'm going to fail,' 'My mind will go blank'); each student writes one they tell themselves on one side of the card.
- In pairs, each student reads their phrase to their partner and together they turn it into a phrase that pushes them forward, realistic and in the present, such as 'I studied, I'll take it one question at a time' (2 min).
- They write the new phrase on the other side of the card in big letters.
- Practice in motion: standing, during a slow overhead arm stretch they read the drag-down phrase while breathing in and, lowering the arms while breathing out, flip the card and read the push-forward phrase; five reps (2 min).
- 2-minute wrap-up: three volunteers read their new phrase; suggest keeping the card in their pencil case and reading it before the next test.
Rules
- Phrases are personal; they are read aloud only if the owner wants.
- New phrases must be believable; no 'I'll get a perfect score' if you don't believe it.
- During the stretch, leave enough space so no one gets hit by an arm.
Variations
Easier
Pick the new phrase from a list you post on the board.
Standard
Create the new phrase with a partner starting from their own negative thought.
Harder
Make two cards, one for tests and one for competition, and practice both.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility do the stretch seated, raising their arms as far as is comfortable.
- For students who struggle with reading or writing, the partner can write for them or they may draw a symbol.
- Shy students may work on the phrase alone and check it with you quietly.
Learning goals
- Identify negative thoughts that show up before tests or competitions.
- Turn those thoughts into realistic messages that help them act.
- Link the new message to a calm breath and movement.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cardstock: 13
- markers: 25
Teacher tip
Avoid empty slogans and go for concrete instructions like 'I'll start with what I know.' Have the cardstock pre-cut.
