Tent Guylines: Tighten with the Taut-Line Hitch
In groups of three, students set up a pole held by two guylines tied with the taut-line hitch, the adjustable knot used on tent guylines. It builds useful ropework and teamwork.
How to play
- Demo: go around the stake, wrap the tail twice around the standing line on the inside, once more on the outside, and slide the knot to tighten (5 min).
- Solo practice tying to a bench leg or stake, tightening and loosening without untying (7 min).
- In threes: a pole standing in a cone, two opposite guylines tied at the top with a clove hitch and at the bottom to stakes with taut-line hitches (8 min).
- Challenge: let go of the pole and keep it standing for 30 seconds; if it leans, fix it by sliding the knots without untying them (6 min).
- Take everything down, count the stakes, and check the cords (4 min).
Rules
- Drive stakes at an angle, leaning away from the pole, and pull them out in the same direction.
- No one walks between a pole and its guylines; go around.
- Push stakes in with a foot or a rubber mallet, never with rocks or wild swings.
- Before leaving, count the stakes and put them back in their bag.
Variations
Easier
Tie to a bench leg with no pole and just practice tightening.
Standard
Pole with two guylines.
Harder
Pole with three guylines 120 degrees apart and a wind test: the partner gently pushes the top.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: tie and tighten knots at table or bench height and direct the group.
- Low vision: bright-colored stakes and cords, with a step-by-step hands-on walkthrough.
- Students who get frustrated: start with a thicker cord that's easier to handle.
Learning goals
- Tie and adjust a taut-line hitch.
- Set up a stable pole with guylines.
- Work as a team of three with clear jobs.
Equipment for a class of 25
- short cords: 30
- tent stakes: 30
- wooden poles: 15
- cones: 15
Teacher tip
On a concrete yard, tie the guylines to bench legs instead of using stakes. Common mistake: wrapping on the outside of the loop; if the knot won't grip, that's why.
