Team String Pen Challenge
In groups of 5, each student holds a string tied to the same marker, and together they must draw a simple shape on butcher paper by balancing the pull on every string. It takes communication, fine motor control and patience, and it's a great calm way to end class.
How to play
- Before class, tie 5 strings about 5 ft long to each marker and secure them with masking tape, spaced around it like the spokes of a wheel.
- Form groups of 5 and have each group sit or kneel around a sheet of butcher paper taped to the floor; each student holds the end of one string.
- Challenge 1 (2 minutes): draw a straight line from one edge of the paper to the other without lifting the marker; you may only pull strings, never touch the marker.
- Challenge 2 (3 minutes): write the group's initial or draw the symbol of a sport from today's lesson.
- Challenge 3 (2 minutes): repeat the shape in silence, communicating only with eye contact; the group decides beforehand who sets the pace.
- Debrief for 2 minutes: Did it go better talking or silent? Who led, and how did they do it?
Rules
- Nobody touches the marker with their hands; it moves only by pulling the strings.
- Pull gently so you don't tear the paper or hurt your hands.
- Never wrap strings around wrists or fingers.
- Everyone keeps their string tight while drawing.
Variations
Easier
Use 3 strings per marker and simple shapes like a circle or a line.
Standard
Groups of 5 with three challenges that get harder.
Harder
Everyone except one student draws with eyes closed while that student gives verbal directions.
Adaptations
- Students with limited mobility can take part seated in their wheelchair with the paper on a table.
- For students who are blind or have low vision, share a string with a partner who describes where the line is going.
- For students with limited hand control, lengthen their string or tie a small ring at the end for an easier grip.
Learning goals
- Coordinate their own movement with teammates' to reach a shared goal.
- Improve fine motor control and how much force they apply.
- Reflect on communication and leadership within the group.

Teacher tip
Prep the string markers with a student helper and store each set in its own bag so they don't tangle. Use thick washable markers so the lines show up clearly.
