Teach It at Home: One Exercise From Today for Your Family
Each student picks a mobility or stretching exercise from the lesson and rehearses teaching it to a family member or housemate, with a version adapted for older or inactive people. The challenge is to take physical activity beyond school and prove they can explain it.
How to play
- Each student chooses a gentle exercise from the lesson and repeats it slowly to lock it in (1 min).
- On the card, prepare an explanation with three keys: starting position, movement and a safety tip, plus an adaptation for someone older or with limited mobility (2 min).
- In pairs, one plays an inexperienced family member and the other teaches the exercise using only words and a demonstration; the "family member" asks real questions (2 min).
- Switch roles (2 min).
- Home challenge: teach it this week and note on the card how it went and what had to change (1 min).
Rules
- Choose only gentle, safe exercises with no load or jumping.
- The safety tip is a required part of the explanation.
- The home challenge is optional and fits each student's situation: it can be a friend or neighbor.
- Respect the speaker's turn without interrupting.
Variations
Easier
The teacher offers three pre-described exercises to choose from.
Standard
Students write their own three-key explanation and one adaptation.
Harder
Prepare a 5-minute mini routine of three exercises to do as a family.
Adaptations
- Deaf or hard of hearing: explain through demonstration and picture cards.
- Autism: provide a script template with sentence starters.
- Limited mobility: choose an upper-body exercise the student can demonstrate seated.
Learning goals
- Transfer what they learned in class to daily life.
- Explain an exercise clearly, including safety criteria.
- Adapt a task for people of different ages and fitness levels.
Equipment for a class of 25
- cards: 30
Teacher tip
Set aside two minutes next class to hear how the challenge went. Many families appreciate it, and it strengthens the link with the school.
