Tai Chi: White Crane Spreads Its Wings

A move from the tai chi short form in which nearly all the weight sits on one leg while one arm rises and the other lowers like a crane's wings. It builds balance, postural alignment, and slow movement control during the cool-down.

How to play

  1. Students spread out on the blacktop two arm lengths apart, all facing the same direction as the teacher (0.5 min).
  2. Empty stance: weight on the back leg with the knee bent, only the toes of the front foot touching with no weight; three breaths per side (1 min).
  3. Crane arms in place: the right hand rises in front to the temple, palm facing in, while the left lowers beside the hip; four breaths (1 min).
  4. Put legs and arms together: from holding the ball, shift the weight back and open the wings as the front toes touch down; four reps per side (2 min).
  5. Hold the crane on your preferred side for five breaths, gazing at a distant point (1 min).
  6. Close the wings, bring the feet together, and take three long breaths with hands on the belly (1.5 min).

Teacher tip

If legs start shaking, ask for less knee bend; share the name of the move and the crane image, because it really helps students remember the arm position.
