Tai Chi Palms with a Balanced Tennis Ball
Each student balances a tennis ball on an open palm and performs slow tai chi movements trying not to drop it, which forces smooth, gentle motion. It builds focus, movement control, and calm breathing at the end of class.
How to play
- Each student grabs a tennis ball and spreads out two arm lengths apart, feet hip-width (0.5 min).
- Ball on the open right palm facing up; raise and lower the hand in front of the body in time with the breath; 6 times, then switch hands (1.5 min).
- Horizontal circle: palm up, trace a big circle in front of the body at belly-button height while turning the waist; 4 per hand (1.5 min).
- Cloud hands with the ball: one hand carries the ball past the face while the other lowers empty; as they cross in the center, the ball passes from palm to palm without tossing it (2 min).
- Add a slow side step with each hand switch, four steps one way and four back (1.5 min).
- Set the ball on the floor, hands on the belly, and take three breaths; return the ball to the bin walking slowly (1 min).
Rules
- If the ball drops, pick it up slowly, breathe, and continue: no points and no elimination.
- Never toss the ball.
- Keep your spacing so dropped balls don't trip anyone.
- The breath sets the pace, not the ball.
Variations
Easier
Do only the raise-and-lower and the circle, standing in place.
Standard
Full sequence with palm-to-palm passes and side steps.
Harder
Do cloud hands looking straight ahead, without watching the ball.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: do the whole drill seated, turning the torso from the chair.
- Visual impairment: use a ball with a bell inside and touch the opposite palm before each pass.
- Low coordination: use a larger foam ball, which sits more easily in the palm.
Learning goals
- Move the arms slowly and with control.
- Stay focused on a precision task.
- Match the pace of movement to the breath.
Equipment for a class of 25
- tennis balls: 25
Teacher tip
Hand out and collect the balls from a bin in each corner to save time; if someone chases a ball at a run, remind them the challenge is to never speed up.
