Tai Chi: Holding the Imaginary Ball
A basic tai chi drill where students hold an imaginary ball in front of the body and switch hand positions from side to side with a waist turn and a slow step. It coordinates the arms and torso, calms the breath, and prepares students to learn the form.
How to play
- Students spread out two arm lengths apart facing the teacher, feet hip-width apart and knees soft (0.5 min).
- Feel the ball: hands in front of the belly button, palms facing, drawing closer on the exhale and apart on the inhale, as if the ball were breathing; 6 times (1 min).
- Ball on the right: right hand on top at chest height, left hand below at hip height, with a gentle waist turn to the right; three breaths (1 min).
- Switch sides: the hands rotate slowly and the ball moves to the left, left hand on top; alternate 8 slow switches (1.5 min).
- Add the step: as the ball switches sides, the foot on that side taps the toes down a hand's width out and returns; 6 switches (1 min).
- Finish by letting go of the ball, hands floating down in front, and three breaths with eyes closed (1 min).
Rules
- The ball always stays the same size: hands don't snap together or pull apart.
- The turn comes from the waist, not just the arms.
- Move slowly and quietly.
- Keep two arm lengths apart so nobody bumps when turning.
Variations
Easier
Do only the ball switches, without the step, 4 reps.
Standard
Ball switches with a waist turn and a step, coordinated with the breath.
Harder
Do the switches with eyes closed, noticing the warmth between the palms.
Adaptations
- Limited mobility: seated, turning the torso from the chair.
- Visual impairment: the teacher describes each hand position and lets the student touch the teacher's hands to check it.
- High built-up tension: shake out the hands for 10 seconds before each switch.
Learning goals
- Coordinate arm movement with a waist turn.
- Move slowly in time with the breath.
- Learn a basic tai chi hand position.
Teacher tip
Tell them to picture a beach ball: it keeps the elbows from clamping to the sides; stand with your back to the class so everyone turns the same direction.
