Tai Chi Follow-the-Leader Line

In lines of five, the student at the front leads slow, familiar tai chi and qigong movements while the others copy; every minute the leader moves to the back and the next student takes over. It builds focus, synchronization, and calm leadership.

How to play

  1. Lines of five all facing the same direction, two arm lengths between students and five yards between lines (0.5 min).
  2. The teacher reviews the movement bank: holding the ball, cloud hands, push forward, raising and lowering the arms with the breath, cat stepping (1 min).
  3. The front student moves very slowly for one minute while everyone behind copies at the same time, like a shadow (1 min).
  4. On a soft whistle, the leader turns slowly, walks to the back of the line, and the next student starts leading (0.5 min).
  5. Repeat the turns until all five have led; the teacher circulates, reminding students to slow down and breathe (4 min).
  6. Closing: all lines stand still, three long breaths with hands on the belly, then share which leader was easiest to follow and why (1 min).

Rules

Teacher tip

This works best once you've taught at least three tai chi moves; if a leader speeds up, stand next to them and slow your own pace so they notice without being stopped.
