Tai Chi Cloud Hands with Breath
Students learn and repeat a single tai chi movement, Cloud Hands, in which the arms trace slow circles in front of the body while the weight shifts from one leg to the other in time with the breath. It is mindful movement that calms and improves balance and coordination.
How to play
- Set students in staggered rows facing you, about six feet apart, with feet a bit wider than the hips and knees slightly bent (30 sec).
- Teach the legs without arms: slowly shift the weight from the left leg to the right and back, feeling the feet on the ground; ten weight shifts (1 min).
- Teach the arms without legs: one hand at face height, palm facing in, the other at belly-button height; the waist turns and the hands swap heights as they pass the center, as if stroking a cloud (1.5 min).
- Put legs and arms together: the weight goes toward the side the waist turns to; demonstrate with your back to the group so they copy you directly (1.5 min).
- Add the breath: breathe in while turning to one side and out while turning to the other, as slowly as possible; three straight minutes in silence, without your voice.
- 30-second wrap-up: finish by lowering the hands in front of the body and taking three breaths standing still with eyes closed.
Rules
- Keep six feet apart so no one gets hit by an arm.
- Knees always slightly bent, never locked.
- The movement is slow and continuous; no one competes to go faster or bigger.
Variations
Easier
Do the arms only, without shifting weight.
Standard
Coordinate arms, legs and breath in place.
Harder
Add side steps, bringing the feet together and apart each cycle.
Adaptations
- For students with limited leg mobility, do it seated, moving only the arms and torso.
- For students with visual impairments, stand beside them and, with permission, guide their arms with a light touch at the wrists.
- For students with poor balance, narrow the stance and let them work next to a wall.
Learning goals
- Perform a slow, continuous movement coordinating arms, trunk and legs.
- Sync movement with calm breathing.
- Use mindful movement to bring arousal down.
Teacher tip
The typical mistake is moving only the arms without turning the waist; have them picture their belly button as a lighthouse sweeping side to side. Always demonstrate facing away or mirrored so they don't mix up sides.
